Friedrich-Wilhelm-Bessel Award for Christian W. Bauer

The renowned theoretical physicist Christian W. Bauer from Berkeley, USA, will visit our group with the support of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, to continue his research together with his scientific host Matthias Neubert at the Institute of Physics.

Christian Bauer, who originates from Germany and lives in California/USA now, has done his PhD in Canada in 2000 at the University of Toronto. Since 2006 he is a scientist of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Bauer belongs to the top group of internationally leading junior scientists within theoretical particle physics. Already in an early stage of his career he achieved results, which have opened up new fields of research and which can be associated directly with his name.

He has become famous for the development of an effective quantum field theory fort he description of high energy scattering and disintegration processes. Together with D. Pirjol, I.W. Stewart, Bauer developped the Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) which deals with applications and further developments in collider physics.
SCET is among the most important conceptual breakthroughs in applied quantum field theory within the last decade.

With the ‚Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel‘ research grant the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung (Bonn) decorates excellent junior scientists, who have earned their PhD within the last 18 years and who have excelled at outstanding research accomplishments early in their scientific careers.
Each year, 25 top researchers from all over the world can be invited for research visits of up to one year to Germany.
The prize carries a value of 45,000 Euros.
